Name Jellyfish and some interesting details

The Name Jellyfish was discovered in 1796 and this name has traditionally been applied to medusae and all similar animals including the comb jellies. I also read about the jellyfish habitat and its anatomy.The term jellies or sea jellies is the recent name given by aquatic people to avoid calling them fish as they don’t have backbones. A groof jellyfish is termed as smack.

The subphylum Medusozoa, jellyfish’s subphylum includes all cnidarians with a medusa stage in their life cycle. The basic cycle is egg, and then planula larva forms and then the turn of polyp, after polyp a medusa forms, with the medusa being the sexual stage. The polyp stage is sometimes secondarily lost. Medusa forms after polyp and Medusozoans have an interesting tetramerous (with the parts of four or multiples of four) symmetry.

Jellyfish do not have any hard parts for example bones etc hence, the fossils are rare.

Jellyfish can be found from one millimeter in bell height and diameter to nearly seven feet or two meters in bell height and diameter, the tentacles and mouth parts mostly extend beyond this bell dimension.

These are so tiny that they can not be seen without a lens (hand lens) or microscope that can extend the size of the human eye. They do not need any sexual life because the jellyfish anatomy can reproduce asexually by fission (splitting in half).

These smallest creatures sometimes live for some minutes only and then shed their gametes in plankton and die, and some can live for weeks and months.

    The sperm is left free in the aquatic environment by a Male Jellyfish, then caught by a Female from the mouth and hence the sperm fertilizes the egg inside the mouth and produces a mating stage termed as larva and then a polyp produces from it and the last stage medusa comes .
  • When Medusa grows, it becomes the final adult sexual stage.

Asexually

They produce asexually (no sex, without sex) by splitting into two (Fusion). Hence, division makes or reproduces a new Jellyfish.
