Types of Elephant
According to new research work, There is a total of three types of elephants. Earlier it was known that only one type exists.
Types of elephants are the African savannah elephant, African forest elephant, and Asian elephant.
The African Savannah Elephant
The second name for these elephants is The African Bush Elephants. These elephants live in the topical area, grassy plains, and bushlands of eastern and southern Africa. South Africa and Zimbabwe are on the list of those countries, that have a large number of these elephants.
Appearance
An elephant is the largest land mammal. The Largest Elephants present in these types are Bush Elephants. On average these elephants are twenty feet long, thirteen feet tall, and weigh up to eleven tons.
Other than this you can easily recognize a bush elephant because of their unique curved tusks and large ears that resemble the continent of Africa.
- This type of elephant is likely to become endangered because of Human-Elephant conflict, Poaching, and Habitat loss.
African Forest Elephant
The African Forest Elephants live in the rainforests of west and central Africa. These animals are primarily found in Gabon and Cameroon kinda countries.
Appearance
The African forest elephant actually, is smaller than the African bush elephant in height. They reach heights of eight to ten feet. An adult of these animals, on average, weighs two to five tons.
How do differentiate them from African Savannah elephants?
The African forest elephants are having oval-shaped ears and their tusks are straighter and thinner as compared to savannah elephants.

Asian Elephants
This elephant kind is found in dry and wet forests. They are found in the grasslands of south Asian countries. Subspecies of Asian elephants – the Indian, Sumatran, and Sri Lankan.
Appearance
The Asian Elephant is the smallest in size, almost nine feet tall and six tons in weight, in all types. They have a very distinctive look. They don’t have round heads as bush elephants have, they have a twin-domed head shape. Their male gender has large tusks.
Asian elephants are one of the species that are endangered. Only forty to fifty thousand 40,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants are left in the wild.
The big threats they have, include human-elephant conflict, habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching.
